Where Art Meets the Sea
Ancient temples, classical dance, and timeless artistry by the Bay of Bengal
Speak to a Journey DesignerAbout Odisha
Odisha is one of India's most rewarding and uncrowded destinations — a sweep of golden Bay of Bengal beaches, emerald rice country, and some of the finest temple architecture ever carved in stone. Stand before the colossal stone chariot of Konark, wander the lively seaside town of Puri, or glide across the vast Chilika lagoon in search of rare dolphins and migratory birds. The living culture is just as captivating: graceful Odissi dance, the painted Pattachitra scrolls of Raghurajpur, and delicate silver filigree work. Fresh seafood and the region's distinctive, lightly spiced cuisine round out the experience, best enjoyed near the shore. Artistic, serene, and refreshingly authentic, Odisha rewards travellers who love heritage, craft, and quiet coastlines.

Heritage Highlights
Discover the monumental sights and cultural treasures that define the soul of this region.
Puri
Dominating the seaside town of Puri, the 12th-century Jagannath Temple is one of India's grandest temples, its soaring tower visible across the rooftops. Dedicated to Lord Jagannath alongside his siblings Balabhadra and Subhadra, it is famous for its uniquely styled wooden deities and for housing what is often called the largest temple kitchen in the world, where meals are still cooked daily in stacked clay pots over wood fires. Its greatest spectacle is the annual Rath Yatra, when towering, brightly decorated wooden chariots are pulled through streets packed with hundreds of thousands of people — an unforgettable sight. The surrounding lanes buzz with markets, sweet shops, and the energy of a classic seaside town. (The inner sanctum is open to Hindus only; our guides arrange excellent viewing for all visitors.)

Konark
Conceived as a colossal stone chariot for Surya the sun god, the 13th-century Konark Sun Temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the crowning achievement of Kalinga architecture. Twenty-four enormous, intricately carved stone wheels — precise enough to work as sundials — line the base, drawn by seven straining stone horses, while the walls teem with reliefs of dancers, musicians, animals, and everyday life. The scale and craftsmanship are genuinely breathtaking, and the warm sandstone glows beautifully in the morning light, making it a favourite of photographers. A short, scenic hop from Puri along the coast, it's essential for anyone who loves art and architecture. Centuries on, it remains one of the great wonders of eastern India.

Satapada
Spreading across more than a thousand square kilometres along Odisha's coast, Chilika is Asia's largest brackish-water lagoon and one of the country's great natural wonders. Separated from the Bay of Bengal by a long sandy ridge, its shallow, ever-shifting waters draw over a million migratory birds each winter — flamingos, pelicans, and ospreys arriving from as far as Siberia and the Caspian. The lake is also one of the few places on earth to shelter the rare Irrawaddy dolphin, which surfaces in the channels near Satapada. Travellers glide out by boat to drift past Kalijai Island and its hilltop shrine, watch fishermen cast their nets in the morning mist, and reach the slender strip where lagoon meets open sea. Vast, tranquil, and teeming with life, Chilika reveals a side of Odisha far removed from its temple towns.
