About Kashmir

Lakes, Meadows & Mountain Magic

The Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir is a great tourist destination. Picturesque and enchanting, Kashmir is cradled high in the lofty green Himalayas and hailed all over the world for its incredible natural beauty. Surrounded by mountain peaks, lush green valleys, glistening lakes, temples and spectacular Mughal-era gardens, it has inspired poets through centuries. Kashmir is crisscrossed by chinar tree-lined roads and quaint wooden bridges; and is home to bustling bazaars, sufi shrines and forts. Add to this, the charms of flavourful Kashmiri cuisine and apples and walnuts from the lush orchards surrounding it.

Srinagar

Shankaracharya Temple

Perched atop Shankaracharya Hill, more than a thousand feet above Srinagar, this ancient stone temple is among the oldest shrines in the Kashmir Valley and one of its most revered. Dedicated to Lord Shiva and reached by a long flight of nearly 250 steps, it is traditionally linked to the 9th-century philosopher Adi Shankaracharya, said to have meditated here while reviving Hindu thought across India. The solid grey-stone structure rises on a high octagonal plinth, its weathered walls and domed sanctum reflecting an austere, age-old design quite distinct from the valley's later Mughal architecture. Travellers climb — or drive part of the way — to the summit for darshan and, just as memorably, for the unmatched panorama it commands: the whole of Srinagar, the silver sweep of Dal Lake, and the encircling mountains laid out below. Ancient, lofty, and serene, it offers both worship and the finest view in the valley.

Hazratbal Shrine

Gleaming in white marble on the western shores of Dal Lake, the Hazratbal Shrine is the most revered Muslim sanctuary in Kashmir. Its name — 'Majestic Place' — reflects what it safeguards: the Moi-e-Muqaddas, a relic believed to be a hair of the Prophet Muhammad, displayed to the faithful on special occasions amid extraordinary devotion. Distinguished by a single graceful dome and slender minaret, it is the only domed mosque in Srinagar, blending Mughal serenity with the soft light of the lake it overlooks. On Fridays and holy days, thousands gather in prayer as the relic is unveiled, and the courtyard fills with quiet reverence against a backdrop of houseboats and snow-clad peaks mirrored in the water. Travellers come both for its spiritual weight and its setting — few shrines anywhere are framed so beautifully. Hazratbal stands as the serene devotional heart of the valley.

Dal Lake

Mirroring the snow-capped Pir Panjal at the edge of Srinagar, Dal Lake is the shimmering centrepiece of the Kashmir Valley and the image most travellers carry home. Spanning some eighteen square kilometres, its still waters are threaded with floating gardens where farmers raise lotus and vegetables on beds of woven weed, and lined with intricately carved wooden houseboats that have welcomed guests since the colonial era. At dawn, the lake comes alive as shikaras — slender, canopied boats — glide out to the floating market, where vendors trade flowers, bread, and saffron from boat to boat. Visitors drift past the Mughal gardens of Nishat and Shalimar, sip kahwa tea on a houseboat veranda, and watch the light soften over the surrounding mountains at dusk. Serene and timeless, Dal Lake is the very picture of Kashmir's 'paradise on earth.'
