About Karnataka

Ruins, Palaces & Coffee Country

Karnataka is one of India's most varied and rewarding states — a sweep from the surreal boulder-strewn ruins of Hampi to the palaces of Mysore, the misty coffee hills of Coorg, and a palm-lined Arabian Sea coast. Clamber among the temples and monuments of the once-mighty Vijayanagara empire, marvel at the lace-fine carvings of the Hoysala temples at Belur and Halebidu, or chase waterfalls and wildlife in the Western Ghats. Bengaluru's gardens and cafés, the spice and coffee estates of the south, and the beaches around Gokarna add even more range. The food is a delight too — crisp dosas, Mangalorean coastal cuisine, and filter coffee — alongside a heritage of Mysore silk and sandalwood. Historic, green, and endlessly diverse, Karnataka rewards travellers who love heritage, nature, and culture.

Hampi

Virupaksha Temple

Rising at the heart of the boulder-strewn ruins of Hampi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Virupaksha Temple is the city's oldest and only continuously active shrine — worship here has never ceased in over 1,300 years. Dedicated to Lord Shiva as Virupaksha, consort of the local goddess Pampa, it grew into a grand complex under the Vijayanagara emperors, who once ruled one of the mightiest empires of medieval India. Its eastern gopuram soars some 160 feet in nine ornately sculpted tiers, while a colonnaded bazaar street, sacred tank, and pillared halls spread beyond. A famous quirk delights visitors: a pinhole in one chamber casts an inverted shadow of the great tower onto the wall. Travellers wander among carved pillars, resident temple elephants, and monkeys as the sun gilds the surrounding granite hills. Virupaksha remains the living soul of Hampi's magnificent stone city.

Belur

Chennakeshava Temple

Set in the small town of Belur on the banks of the Yagachi river, the Chennakeshava Temple is the crowning achievement of Hoysala artistry and a celebrated candidate for UNESCO World Heritage status. Commissioned by King Vishnuvardhana in 1117 and reputedly 103 years in the making, it is dedicated to Lord Vishnu as Chennakeshava — 'the handsome one.' Carved from soft soapstone that hardens with age, virtually every surface is alive with detail: friezes of elephants, horsemen, and swans run beneath rows of celestial dancers, while the bracket figures and lathe-turned pillars — each one unique — display jewel-like precision. Travellers move slowly around the star-shaped platform, discovering scenes from the epics and astonishing filigree that seems impossible in stone. Still an active place of worship after nine centuries, Chennakeshava stands among India's finest temples and a testament to the genius of Hoysala craftsmen.

Mysuru

Mysore Palace

Standing at the heart of Mysuru, the Mysore Palace is among the most opulent royal residences in India and the former seat of the Wadiyar dynasty. The present Indo-Saracenic structure was completed in 1912 by the British architect Henry Irwin after fire destroyed the earlier wooden palace, blending Hindu, Mughal, Rajput, and Gothic styles beneath a cascade of domes and arches. Inside, halls glow with stained-glass ceilings, carved rosewood doors, mosaic floors, and the gold-and-ivory Durbar and marriage pavilions. The palace is most magical during the ten-day Dasara festival, when nearly a hundred thousand bulbs trace its every contour against the night sky and a grand procession of caparisoned elephants winds through the city. Drawing millions of visitors each year, Mysore Palace remains Karnataka's most beloved landmark and a living memory of princely splendour.
