About Himachal Pradesh

Snow Peaks, Pine Valleys & Hill-Station Charm

Himachal Pradesh is the Himalayas at their most welcoming — a state of snow-dusted peaks, apple orchards, pine-scented valleys, and hill stations made for slowing down. Ride the toy train up to Shimla's ridge, chase snow and adventure in Solang Valley above Manali, or find calm among the monasteries and prayer flags of McLeod Ganj, home of the Dalai Lama. Riverside Kullu, the cold desert of Spiti, and the forests around Dharamshala add range to every itinerary. Crisp mountain mornings, hearty Himachali food, and warm local hospitality make it a favourite for families and first-time mountain travellers alike. Scenic, restful, and full of adventure, Himachal rewards travellers who love nature, fresh air, and the hills.

Manali

Hadimba Temple

Set within the towering deodar cedars of the Dhungri forest above Manali, the Hadimba Temple is one of Himachal's most atmospheric shrines. Built in 1553 by Raja Bahadur Singh, it honours Hadimba Devi — the demoness-turned-wife of Bhima from the Mahabharata — and is unusual for enshrining a sacred footprint rather than an idol. Its four-tiered pagoda roof rises in diminishing pyramids of timber and metal above a base of intricately carved wood depicting dancers, deities, and mythical beasts, while a natural rock forms the inner sanctum. Travellers climb through the cool, fragrant woodland to reach it, often greeted by angora rabbits and local women in traditional dress, and linger in the clearing where light filters through the cedars. Steeped in legend and Himalayan craftsmanship, Hadimba remains the spiritual heart of old Manali and a place of rare, forested calm.

Solang Valley

Cradled in the mountains some fourteen kilometres north of Manali, Solang Valley is Himachal's most exhilarating alpine playground, framed by the glaciers and snow peaks of the Pir Panjal range. Named for the village at its head, the broad green meadow sits at around 2,560 metres, where the Beas river runs cold and clear through pine and deodar. In winter the slopes turn white and draw skiers and snowboarders; through the warmer months the valley fills with paragliders launching from the ridges, zorbing globes rolling down the grass, and a gondola lifting visitors to the higher reaches for views toward Rohtang Pass. Beyond the adventure, travellers come simply to breathe the thin mountain air, sip chai at the meadow's edge, and watch the light move across the peaks. Equal parts thrill and tranquillity, Solang captures the wild beauty of the Himalayas.

Shimla

Jakhoo Temple

Crowning Jakhoo Hill, the highest point in Shimla at 2,455 metres, the Jakhoo Temple is dedicated to Lord Hanuman and steeped in Ramayana legend — believed to mark the spot where he paused while searching for the life-saving Sanjeevani herb. The shrine is presided over by a towering 108-foot statue of Hanuman, painted bright saffron and visible from across the valley, ranking among the tallest images of the deity in the world. Travellers reach the summit by a steep two-kilometre walk through deodar forest from the Ridge, by taxi, or aboard a panoramic ropeway that glides over the rooftops of the hill station. The reward is a sweeping vista of the snow-tipped Himalayas and the colonial town below, often shared with the temple's famously bold resident monkeys. Equal parts pilgrimage and panorama, Jakhoo is the soaring high point of any Shimla visit.
