About Gujarat

Deserts, Coastlines & Craft Heritage

Gujarat is one of India's most diverse and surprising states — where the dazzling white salt flats of the Rann of Kutch meet a long, temple-dotted coastline and the only place on earth to see Asiatic lions in the wild, at Gir. Wander the UNESCO-listed heritage streets of Ahmedabad, step back five thousand years at the Harappan sites of Lothal and Dholavira, or marvel at the stepwells and sun temples of the medieval era. The living craft heritage is extraordinary — block prints, bandhani tie-dye, mirror-work embroidery, and beadwork brought to life in village workshops. And the food is pure joy: the colourful all-vegetarian Gujarati thali, sweet-savoury flavours, and bustling night markets. Warm, hospitable, and endlessly varied, Gujarat rewards travellers who love heritage, wildlife, craft, and coastline.

Dwarka

Dwarkadhish Mandir

Where the Gomti river meets the Arabian Sea, the soaring Dwarkadhish Temple — the 'Jagat Mandir' — is the architectural centrepiece of the ancient coastal town of Dwarka. Its five-storey limestone-and-sandstone spire, supported by 72 carved pillars, rises dramatically above the waterfront, crowned by an enormous 52-yard flag that is changed by hand five times a day — a ritual worth timing your visit for. The town itself is full of character: sea breezes, ghats, and boats setting out for the island of Bet Dwarka. Believed to be among India's oldest temple sites, with roots stretching back over two millennia, it carries a powerful sense of history. The scale and the seaside light make it a memorable, very photogenic stop.

Saurashtra

Somnath Jyotirlinga

Standing right on the shore of the Arabian Sea in Saurashtra, the Somnath Temple is one of India's most dramatically sited monuments. Famously destroyed and rebuilt many times across the centuries, today's grand Chalukya-style structure rises in golden stone above the crashing waves, its spire and carvings glowing at sunset. A curious highlight is the Baana Stambha, an arrow-pillar said to mark an unobstructed sea route all the way to Antarctica. The real magic comes after dark, when the open-air sound-and-light show plays out against the sound of the surf — a genuinely atmospheric evening. Sea air, history, and spectacle in one place make Somnath among Gujarat's most memorable coastal stops.

Kevadia

Statue of Unity

Rising 182 metres above the Narmada valley near Kevadia, the Statue of Unity is the tallest statue in the world — nearly twice the height of New York's Statue of Liberty. Unveiled in 2018, it honours Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the statesman who wove more than five hundred princely states into a single republic. Clad in bronze panels over a steel and concrete frame, the figure was engineered to withstand high winds and seismic tremors. A high-speed lift carries visitors to a viewing gallery set within the statue's chest, 153 metres up, with panoramas across the Sardar Sarovar Dam and the Satpura and Vindhya hills. The surrounding precinct offers a valley of flowers, a jungle safari, and a nightly light-and-sound show projected onto the monument itself. A bold modern landmark, it has swiftly become one of Gujarat's proudest national symbols.
